ALN Magazine has announced the opening of the 2008 TurnKey Awards nominations – a program designed to recognize standouts in the laboratory animal facility field.
The 2008 TurnKey Awards are comprised of two categories:
- The Facility of the Year Award recognizes outstanding achievements in the design/build of a new or renovated laboratory animal facility. The award is intended to showcase new ideas and accomplishments in facility design, construction, and operation.
- Facility Leader of the Year Award recognizes laboratory animal professionals who exhibit outstanding leadership and promote the highest standards in the care and use of laboratory animals. The successful nominee should be in a supervisory capacity; place a strong emphasis on high standards of animal care, quality of services, and compliance; manage and motivate staff; and inspire his/her staff and peers.
A look at last year’s winners
The Harvard Biology Research Infrastructure was named as the 2007 TurnKey Facility of the Year. The Harvard BRI is a 72,000 square foot, two-floor underground facility built to replace facilities scattered around the campus. With the goal of supporting high-end research, the design, planning, and construction highlighted the considerations and challenges in building a complex facility.
The 2007 Leader of the Year, Ronald W. Gordon, BA, MALS, RLATG, has more than 30 years of laboratory animal experience beginning at Yale University where he co-authored Yale’s first Animal Welfare Bibliography. Gordon was noted specifically for his employee recognition programs and encouraging continuing education and certification for staff members.
Nominate
For the 2008 Facility of the Year, the successful nomination should include a case study of the project including goals, scope of the project, any special requirements or restrictions that had to be considered, new ideas or technology that were incorporated, compliance issues, and the communication and coordination between the different stakeholders involved in the project. Where appropriate, photos may be included to illustrate the text. In order to be considered, the facility must have been completed no earlier than July 1, 2006.
The successful nominee for the 2008 TurnKey Leader of the Year should be in a supervisory capacity; place a strong emphasis on high standards of animal care, quality of services, and compliance; manage and motivate staff; and the further capacity to inspire their staff and peers in the course of his/her work.
An independent panel of industry experts will review all nominations and select winners. The Facility Leader of the Year and one representative of the winning Facility of the Year team will be our guests at the 2008 TurnKey Conference, to be held April 17-18, 2008 in Baltimore, MD. Also sponsored by ALN® Magazine, this annual conference offers programs specifically geared toward building or renovating laboratory animal facilities.
Nomination forms must be postmarked by the end of the day (midnight EST) on December 14, 2007.
