Greener Lab Animal Facilities

Even lab animal facilities can be designed or renovated to use less energy, and conserve water and other resources.

The subject of green vivaria is a little like the topic of global warming. More people are talking about it than are doing anything to change it. Non-residential buildings, including research animal labs, have a surprisingly negative impact on the natural environment. Structures, excluding homes, account for 65 percent of electricity consumption, 36 percent of energy use, and 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, raw materials, and waste output, according to the U.S. Green Building Council.
