Fox urges innovation through translation
Getting biomedical advances from the research pipeline to the marketplace is an important step in meeting the need for new drugs, according to actor – and Parkinson's patient – Michael J. Fox.

Fox addressed translational research and its implications during his keynote speech at Bio 2007 in Boston recently. Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2000 and has established The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, said translational research requires a "new kind of stakeholder."

Current federal regulations mandate that institutions using animals in research, testing, or education must establish and provide resources for an animal care program along with an institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) to oversee and evaluate the program. While the regulations indicate that it is the institution's responsibility to provide training for members of the animal care program and the IACUC committee, surprisingly, there are no specifics on how to actually accomplish this. This "gray" area causes difficulty for institutions because they do not fully understand the training needs for a functional animal care program.
