Director, University Laboratory Animal Resources

Florida State University seeks a senior full-time laboratory animal veterinarian to direct the Program of Laboratory Animal Resources and serve as campus attending veterinarian. Under the auspices of the Vice President for Research, the Director will have oversight responsibility for all animals at both on- and off-campus sites and manage an animal research and teaching program that complies with all federal, state, and local regulations and policies. Specific responsibilities include developing policies and programs to ensure the provision of adequate veterinary care to FSU animals; serving as a member of the campus Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and other relevant committees such as the Biomedical Advisory Committee and the Emergency Management Committee; maintaining the campus' AAALAC accreditation; advising campus administration about issues pertaining to animal care and use; providing training in animal care and use to campus personnel and assisting researchers with the development of animal models and research protocols; and, where appropriate, serving as the campus spokesperson on animal care and use issues.

FSU's AAALAC-accredited vertebrate animal program serves over 70 research investigators with more than 100 ACUC-approved protocols involving rodents, rabbits, birds and aquatic species used within various academic units and programs at FSU. There are currently 6 campus sites for animal housing comprising 39,030 square feet of space. FSU is redeveloping a 37-acre tract on its West campus into a major basic science quadrangle that will increase twofold the amount of space devoted to animal research. The Science Quad is already home to the newly created College of Medicine, and currently under construction and ready for occupancy by 2008 a new Life Sciences Teaching and Research Center, a new Psychology Research Complex, and a new Centralized Animal Care Support Facility. When completed, the Science Quad will provide infrastructure for rapid expansion in biomedical and behavioral research and animal support facilities for all animal research investigators of the Science Quad. Candidates must have expert knowledge of all regulatory policies governing animal use and care and have excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills. We are especially desirous of candidates who value the benefits of animal research and concern for animal welfare and who can work cooperatively with research faculty to advance animal research of the highest quality.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must hold a veterinary degree from an AVMA accredited institution, a minimum of a DVM/VMD degree or equivalent, be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state, and be ACLAM board certified or board eligible. A Minimum of 10 years of professional laboratory animal experience excluding training is expected; at least 5 of which must be experience managing a complex animal care and use program (fiscal, administrative, human resources). Candidates must have detailed knowledge of the laws, regulations, guidelines and policies relevant to animal use and care, the ability to effectively supervise staff and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
