Pathogenesis of Bacterial Infections in Animals

Article Posted: October 23, 2009

Blackwell Publishing released the Third Edition of Pathogenesis of Bacterial Infections in Animals by Gyles, Prescott, Songer, and Thoen in 2004. The authors, professors of microbiology in Canada and the United States, have collaborated with scientists worldwide in the fields of animal and human health to write this text regarding bacteria, their pathogenesis, and ever-changing virulence abilities. Compared to previous versions of the text, introductory chapters have been included for a basic review of pathogenicity and the evolutionary changes bacteria have made for their survival and in their virulence. Molecular science is increasingly more important in understanding the pathogenesis of bacterial infections as well as their prevention and treatment. Each of the subsequent chapters includes both the current understanding of molecular interactions and those on a more gross level such as physiologic host reactions. Chapters regarding bacteria with no recent advances in pathogenicity have been removed to create an up-to-date text.
